Black MacBook Review by Peter

Overall this is a nice computer, though it has significant flaws in terms of design.

POSITIVES:

Power and Speed
  • Display quality (bright, crisp and reasonable viewing angles)
  • Sleek overall design
  • magnetic latch is great
  • great feeling keyboard
  • nice size and solid weight
  • Ability to run windows

NEGATIVES:
  • Lack of dedicated graphics chip - not a problem for most people, but definitely a weakness for some.
  • Smudging surface. Ridiculous to use a plastic that is so sentivie to fingerprints. It's not average - much much worse! It's really a magnet for finger prints and greese
  • Very sharp edges that cut into your wrists - crazy to let something like this pass through.
  • The display goes back further than the macbook pros, but still not enough
  • Black versions seem to have more hinge noises than white ones. Don't know why, but I've had several with this problem.
  • Gets quite hot
  • speakers are mediocre

It's a nice computer, but there is much better hardware out there on the PC side - thinkpads and some sonys for example. the macbook has a nice minimalist design, though I feel Apple has clearly put style over function with its recent portables. In other words: nice, but not that special. No 'wow' feeling.

I'm a happy (white) macbook owner, but I totally agree with all the pros and cons. Yeah, it's a sweet computer, but it's not perfect. My whitemacbook is even worse for getting dirty looking (fingerprints, smudges) than my brother's blackbook, which seems to have a slightly different outer surface. Take a white eraser to it, and all of a sudden you'll see just how discoloured it gets over time (just don't lose shavings in the keyboard!!) And the edge of the laptop is really hard and sharp on the wrists, but I got a bluetooth keyboard for Christmas, so life is good. All in all, a really good (but not perfect) computer. Course, we're all buying Macs for the software, right? And Parallels is really cool too, ironically.

sean, you may want to try some melamine foam to clean your macbook. mr. clean magic eraser is one of the more popular brands

Well in my opinion no one should use a laptop while eating macdonalds or greasy food (most probable cause of grease marks) anyway.
also most civilised people wash their hands after eating and useing greasy items.

Naw seriously, i\'m a new mac user. OSX is great, very user friendly. Hatin how easily the fingerprints collect on the shell though. I mean come on though, you command this new aire of respect when people see that glowing apple in the back of your laptop. Am I right or just crazy?!

I purchased my white MacBook last sept and I find that the glossy plastic used on the outer case is extremely susceptible to scratches, even from the synthetic fabric of my laptop bag. I do not understand why apple would make a case out of such a soft plastic. That said, this is one of the only complaints I have with apple\'s design. I wish they would come out with an aluminum or magnesium encased MacBook that didn\'t cost $2000

the person that posted the comment about the mcdonalds and greasy food should probably be less condescending. greasy food isn\'t the only thing that causes your fingers and hands to release oil. something called sweat. you know, the thing that happens when people are sometimes under high pressure situations? situations that might come up when you\'re working on your MACBOOK during certain jobs that require it?
