Apple updates iMac line, unveils new 24" iMac

Posted: September 6th, 2006

iMac Update

Just a few hours ago Apple updated their iMac line to include the new Core 2 Duo processors from Intel. The update also included an unveiling of a 24" iMac, with the iMacs now available in three different sizes (17", 20", and 24").

According to Apple's website, the 24" model is a full 40% brighter than the 20-inch model. It also features an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, which Apple states is "up to 60% faster". However, keep in mind that all these numbers are only seen under optimal conditions (i.e. not that often).

The new 24" model is priced at $2,000, with the 20" at $1,500. Both are clocked at 2.16Ghz, with all other specifications the same except for the video card. The $500 difference in price attributed to the larger screen and faster video card. The update itself came as a surprise. Apple has recently scheduled a media event for the 12th of September, only a few days from today. Fortunately the price of the iMacs remains the same, with all iMacs now shipping with a Core 2 Duo.

It's becoming more and more obvious that Apple intends to place an iMac in the center of every living room. With the brighter screens, Apple Remote and Front Row, it's not such a bad idea after all.
